Department of Tamil

The Tamil Department has been maintaining a cultural and academic based tradition since1966. It has shown its iridescence in both its academical and social based activities. It started with the Pre-University course and later on to an undergraduate course. It was headed then by late Prof.S.Sivaramalingam who set certain guidelines for the smooth and excellent functioning of the Department. Part I General Tamil and Part III Advance Tamil were taught to the Pre-University course students. The excellent Teaching faculty in 1966 was Dr.K.Padmanabhan, and Tutors like Thiru.S.Sadhasivam, Thiru.P.Loganathan, Thiru.A.S.Shanmuga Sundaram and Thiru.V.Rajagopalan.

When the under graduate courses were introduced in the year 1972, the department was headed by a Poet and Prof.Thiru.Ulundurpettai Shanmugam. During his tenure the department had the privilege of having literary scholars like Prof.Pon.Selvaganapathy, Prof.Narayanan and Prof.M.Narayanan. After a brief lull the department gained its momentum under the able stewardship of late Prof.S.Sivaramalingam. The tradition of imbibing and inculcating literary nodes and techniques had been consistently maintained by the excellent and learned faculties like Prof.A.Rajendran (Dheeran), Prof.N.Manickavasagam, Prof.K.Devarajan, Prof.S.Balasundharam, Prof.M.Vannamuthu, Prof.SP.Veerapandian and Prof.B.Ramachandran. On account of age some staff including the Head got retired.

Since 1993, The Tamil Department has reached the pinnacles of Literary Excellence under the able stewardship of Dr.S.Balasundharam and later followed by Dr.B.Ramachandran and Dr.Thangamarimuthu. At present it has touched the zenith in the utilization of Tamil working knowledge to its optimum level.

The Department Library has procured reference and Research books for the benefit of both the teaching faculty and budding scholar students.

The Department right from its inception in the college has been conducting Tamil Mandram activities. This body aims in promoting the hidden skills of students both at the college and inter collegiate levels. It conducts various competitions such as Oratorical, Poetry writing, Essay writing, Debate and General Knowledge Quiz. The winners are given with cash prizes and certificates.

The Department has also brought out the talents of the students to limelight by making them to participate in competitions held at various levels conducted by various organizers. To list a few are Kamban Kazhagam, Murasoli Maaran Trust, Kannadasan Paasarai, Shekizhar Research Institute, Mylapore Bharathi Organization, T.Nagar Vallalaar Organization, Tambaram, Bharathi Unit etc.

The Department through its Tamil Mandram has been successful in bringing eminent literary personalities to give lecturers on various topics. The personalities of fame who have visited till date are Thiru.E.V.K.Sampath, Thiru.Ma.Po.Sivagnam, Dr.K.Kalimuthu, Thiru.K.A.Krishnasamy, Thiru.Ponnaiyan, Thiru.K.Veeramani, Thiru.Periyar Dhasan, Thiru.Thenkatchi Swaminathan, Thiru.Auvvai Natarajan, Thiru.Cho.N.Kandasamy, Thiru.M.M.Dhandapani, Thiru.T.Rajagopal, Thiru.Aranga Ramalingam, Thiru.Ra.Chokalingam, Thiru.K.Mohan Raju, Thiru.S.Thirunavukkarasu and Pazha Muthu Veerapan. Besides literary figures top artists like Kamalhasan, S.P.Muthuraman, Rajesh, Major Sundarajan, R.S. Manohar, Vivek and Pushpavanam Kuppusamy have contributed their literary talents through this mandram activities.
