LIBRARY GENESIS

The Library is the heart of the institution. It is to promote sharing of resources by collecting, storing and disseminating information and by offering computerized services to the users. Institutions of higher education have the main responsibilities of equipping students, researchers and faculty with advanced knowledge and skills. Well-equipped and managed library is an essential prerequisite to achieve this. In particular, scientific research needs a library as well as its laboratories. Keeping this in view, the S.I.V.E.T.  College Library undertakes many responsibilities and performs varied functions and it plays a vital role in the university education and research by providing invaluable resource of knowledge.

The S.I.V.E.T. College Library was established in 1966 along with 250 books. Our library had a humble beginning and over these 50 years its growth has been phenomenal and transformed from “book-only” library to a modern “digital library” with invaluable Collection of e-resources to cater to the increasing information requirements of the U.G. and P.G. and  research students.

Spread over about 2,000 square feet library is home to about 47,000 books.  Endowed with a first floor that houses a portion of the library’s book racks, the library is provides a lovely ambience to sit and read.

USER ORIENTATION

Students at the entry level are instructed about the rules and regulations through workshops at entry level for using library resources at specially designed orientation programed. Special training is provided on use of internet, INFLIBNET and Multimedia. Librarian provides orientation on the user facilities

Circulation Section:

Circulation Section handles the Front Desk operations of the library and is very important because it is the first contact point for faculty and users to the library. Efficiently functioning Circulation Desk leaves a lasting impression on the user and hence it is very important section of the library. Major Activities of the Section are:

  1. Issue and returns of Learning Resources(Primarily Books)
  2. Attending the Users’ query for effective interpretation of library rules and regulations
  3. Registration of new members

Mock competitive model examination

The Department of Library and information science has been conducting Mock competitive model examination for the benefit of U.G and P.G. students since 2010 and the certificates will be issued meritorious students.

Book Exhibition:

Exhibition on subjects and reference books would help students  to be aware of the kind of books already available to them. To popularize the library consciousness among the various users of the library and to motivate the users to read the books, the library should arrange the book exhibitions on different occasions like Ranganathan‟sbirthday (Librarian’s Day), Library Week, Independence day, Republic day, Teachers‟ day ,  Teachers‟ day, Management festival, college annual function day etc.

EBOOKS

The e-books from the various websites are scrutinised and categorised in to various subjects which are uploaded in the college Library server for the benefit of the students.  Those who are in need of the material can download it from the system

NON-BOOK MATERIALS

A small collection of Non-Book Materials such as Audio Cassettes, Video

Cassettes/VHSs, Microfilms, Digital movie projector Booklets, Posters etc is being maintained at the Periodicals Section and enlisted in a computer file (MS-Excel).

These materials are open to all our Library users.

NEWS PAPER CLIPPINGS

The library is subscribing number of newspapers. Every day the newspapers are containing very important news in special edition on various subjects which are very useful to the readers. Depending on the usefulness of the information available in the newspaper, it may be cut/photocopied and arranged subject wise and kept in the library files for the use of readers.

CAREER GUIDANCE

Career guidance and counselling programs in higher educational institutions aim to provide assistance and advice to students to make them more and better informed in their future educational and career choices. It also helps to the students to realize their strengths and weaknesses by instilling self-awareness, decision making skills, planning skills and personality development etc., At present, there is greater need to provide career guidance services in the college libraries. Career guidance at graduation level help students to select subjects of specialization which help them later in choosing vocation; it helps to divert the students towards more  useful activities

Display Services

Photocopying Service ( Free photocopy facilities)

A photocopying service is available for books and periodicals in the library on a free of cost.  This service makes it possible for users to  obtain  permanent copies of library materials. Photocopying should be made in compliance with the copyright ordinance

Multimedia Section:

Over 500 informative, entertainment and subject CDs are available for use within the Library

A reference section has many encyclopedias, dictionaries and valuable books on various subjects for the immediate reference. Books available in this section will not be issued and permitted to take photocopy within the Library premises.

Textbook Section:

A textbook section holds the textbooks, reference books for the syllabus prescribed by our University. Books available in this section will not be issued and permitted to take photocopy within the Library premises.
